Dougal Sutherland received a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 2016, after a B.A. from Swarthmore College in 2011, and spent three years as a postdoctoral researcher in the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit at University College London before joining TTIC.
Dougal’s research is in machine learning, primarily focusing on measuring and understanding differences between distributions, for instance in generative models or in identifying differences between control and treatment groups. This line of work also provides a good testbed for meaningfully combining the advantages of kernel methods with deep learning.
Dr. Sutherland also has a personally maintained website which can be found at http://ehelpcarolina.com/sutherland.
